Why solar?

Six reasons UK schools are choosing solar PPAs.

From lower energy bills to live STEM teaching resources, solar PV delivers measurable benefits to your school's budget, sustainability targets, and students, all with zero upfront cost.

01
Energy bill savings

Lower electricity costs.

A properly sized solar PV system can offset a meaningful share of your school's annual electricity consumption. With a Solar PPA, you buy that generated power at a fixed per-kWh rate typically below your current grid tariff, savings start from day one.

For a 100kWp system on a secondary school, that's a meaningful share of annual electricity cost, generated on-site at a lower per-kWh rate for the contract term.

Annual saving example: 100kWp system · ~90,000 kWh annual generation · ~£10,000-£18,000 saved per year compared to grid pricing.
02
Zero upfront cost

No capital outlay. No balance sheet impact.

Under a Solar Power Purchase Agreement, the funder pays for design, equipment, installation, and maintenance. Your school pays nothing upfront, you simply purchase the electricity generated at a pre-agreed rate.

For maintained schools and academies, this means solar can be implemented without diverting capital from your other priorities. No PSL approval. No CIF bid. No internal capital allocation discussion.

For MATs, the funder takes on all asset risk. The trust simply enters into an operating agreement for the electricity, which is treated as an operational expense rather than a capital asset.

03
Fixed-rate energy security

Protection from energy market volatility.

Grid electricity prices have been highly volatile over recent years. Schools on standard variable tariffs have seen significant increases in bills. Even fixed-term grid contracts only protect for 1-3 years at a time.

A Solar PPA locks in a fixed per-kWh rate for the portion of energy generated by your system, with controlled annual indexation, for the full 10-25 year term. That's a meaningful proportion of your electricity cost protected against future price shocks.

Strategic value: 15+ years of predictable, fixed-rate energy budgeting. Easier to plan long-term spending.
04
Net-zero progress

Verifiable carbon reduction for your Climate Action Plan.

The DfE Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy (April 2022) requires all UK schools to develop a Climate Action Plan by 2025. Solar PV is one of the most measurable, visible, and impactful interventions you can include.

A 100kWp system displaces approximately 18-22 tonnes of CO2 per year based on UK grid carbon intensity. Over the asset life, that's a substantial volume of avoided emissions, directly attributable to your school in your Scope 2 reporting.

  • Verified monthly generation and CO2 displacement reports
  • Direct data for Climate Action Plan reporting
  • Demonstrable progress toward Net Zero by 2050
  • Tangible action that staff, parents, and inspectors can see
05
STEM curriculum integration

A live teaching resource on your roof.

Few sustainability investments offer both operational savings AND direct educational value. Solar PV is the rare one that does both.

Every system includes a live data feed showing real-time generation, daily totals, monthly trends, and lifetime carbon offset. This data can be:

  • Displayed in your foyer, a constant visible reminder of your sustainability commitment to parents and visitors
  • Integrated into the curriculum, physics (photovoltaic effect, electrical circuits), geography (climate change, UK energy mix), design technology (electrical systems), maths (data analysis, percentages, graphs)
  • Used for assemblies and citizenship education, connecting climate action to school operations
  • Shared with parents and the wider community through your website and newsletters

We provide free lesson plans aligned to the national curriculum for KS1 through to A-level, ready to drop into your teaching.

06
Reputation & community impact

Visible leadership on climate.

Parents, prospective families, governors, and the wider community increasingly look for tangible evidence of a school's values. Solar PV is visible, measurable, and meaningful action, not just policy on a website.

For independent schools, this matters for parent engagement and applications. For maintained schools and academies, it differentiates you in a competitive admissions environment and reinforces your community standing.

Parent communication

Solar PV generation featured in newsletters, prospectus, and open day materials. A concrete example of values-in-action.

Community partnership

School solar generation can be highlighted in local media and council sustainability reporting, strengthening relationships with stakeholders.

Inspection & reporting

Useful evidence to include in Ofsted personal development narratives and DfE Climate Action Plan reporting.

Staff engagement

Teachers and support staff are proud to work somewhere that walks the talk on environmental responsibility.

Bottom line

Lower bills, real net-zero progress, and a teaching resource.
