Who owns and maintains the solar system on a school?
A contracted funder owns, insures and maintains the system for the term of the agreement. The school simply buys the power it uses. Solar Powered Schools develops and manages the project.
What happens at the end of the school PPA?
The school can typically extend the agreement, take ownership at fair market value, or have the system removed. The choice sits with the school or trust.

How much does solar PV cost for a school?
Through a Solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), the upfront cost is nil. A contracted funder pays for design, installation, equipment, and maintenance. How much can a school save on energy bills with solar?
Schools typically see meaningful annual electricity bill reductions with a well-sized solar PV system. A 100kWp system can offset approximately 85,000-95,000 kWh per year. What is a Solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)?
A Solar PPA is a contract where a third-party funder pays for, installs, owns, and maintains a solar PV system on your school's roof or land. Your school agrees to buy the electricity generated at a pre-agreed, fixed rate for the contract term. No upfront cost, no maintenance liability, and the rate is lower than your current grid electricity tariff.
How does VAT work for school solar PPAs?
PPA payments are typically subject to standard 20% VAT (the supply of electricity). Maintained schools can usually reclaim VAT through their normal Section 33 arrangements. Academies are within the academies VAT scheme and can reclaim VAT on most purchases including solar PPAs. Independent schools may have partial VAT recovery depending on their structure. What is the typical PPA contract term?
School PPAs typically run 10-25 years, with 15 commonly cited. Specific terms vary by funder and school appetite. Longer terms typically secure lower per-kWh rates because the funder recovers capital over a longer period. Shorter terms suit schools with leasehold considerations or shorter planning horizons but at slightly higher per-kWh rates.
Can we exit the PPA early?
Most PPAs include early termination provisions. The buyout cost is calculated as the unrecovered capital plus a pre-agreed early termination fee, less the residual asset value. Early termination is most economical from year 10 onwards. We provide a transparent termination cost schedule upfront so you understand exactly what exit looks like at any point during the term.
Who owns the solar panels?
During the PPA term, the funder owns the system. They are responsible for maintenance, insurance, monitoring, and any repairs. At end of term, most PPAs offer to transfer ownership to the school for a nominal £1, allowing continued free electricity for the remaining asset life. Alternative end-of-term options include extension or removal.
What happens if the school closes or relocates?
PPAs include contractual provisions for site closure, lease changes, mergers, and ownership transfer. Most situations are handled by (a) transferring the PPA to a successor occupier, (b) terminating early with a calculated termination fee, or (c) removing the asset at no cost to the school. No school is locked in against operational reality, we explain all options upfront.
Technical & installation
Will solar work in the UK climate?
Yes. Modern solar PV generates effectively in UK diffuse light conditions. A typical south-facing installation in the Midlands produces around 900-950 kWh per kWp per year. Even northern Scotland projects achieve 750+ kWh/kWp annually. Schools across Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Northern England all have successful solar installations.
Will installation disrupt teaching?
In almost all cases, no. Installations are scheduled with your facilities team to minimise classroom disruption. Where on-site work coincides with term, it is restricted to outdoor or roof-only activity. Larger ground-mount projects can usually proceed during term time with no classroom impact. We coordinate every step with your facilities team and academic calendar.
How long does installation take?
Most school rooftop installations take 2-4 weeks of on-site work. A typical 100kWp primary school installation completes in 7-10 days. Larger 300kWp+ secondary schools can take 3-4 weeks. The full process from contract signature to commissioning is typically 4-6 months, including planning, structural surveys, DNO grid connection, and installation.
What if our roof needs replacement or repair?
We carry out a comprehensive structural survey before installation. If your roof needs work, we can either (a) sequence the project after roof works, (b) include roof refurbishment in the PPA financial structure for an extended term, or (c) work with you on alternative locations like ground-mount or carport. Roof condition is one of the first things assessed in our free site evaluation.
Do we need planning permission?
Most school rooftop solar installations are permitted development under the General Permitted Development Order (Schedule 2, Part 14). No planning application is needed if panels are flush-mounted, don't protrude more than 200mm from the roof, and aren't on a listed building or in a conservation area. Larger ground-mount installations (over 50kWp) or installations on listed buildings do require planning permission, we handle this for you.
Will the solar system affect our roof warranty?
No, when properly installed. Modern roof-mounted solar uses penetration-free ballasted systems (on flat roofs) or careful flush-mounting on pitched roofs that doesn't void manufacturer warranties. We coordinate with your roof manufacturer where required and provide MCS-certified installation that maintains roof warranty.
What maintenance is required?
Under a PPA, ALL maintenance is included in the contract and managed by the funder. Solar PV is famously low-maintenance: annual visual inspection, occasional panel cleaning (often unnecessary due to UK rainfall), and inverter replacement around year 12-15. None of this is the school's responsibility under a PPA.
What about lightning protection and insurance?
All systems include integrated surge protection devices (SPDs) to manage lightning-induced voltage spikes. Comprehensive insurance (damage, theft, third-party liability) is included in the PPA. Your school's existing buildings insurance is not affected and may even reduce slightly because the funder is liable for the solar asset.
Can we integrate battery storage?
Yes, increasingly common. Battery storage allows your school to store solar generated during the day for use in early morning or evening hours, or during power outages (resilience). Batteries can be included from day one or retrofitted later. Commercial battery payback is improving as costs fall and grid electricity rates rise, we model both options in your assessment.
Can we add EV charging?
Absolutely. Solar + EV charging is an increasingly attractive combination for schools, staff EV charging, school minibus charging, and visitor charging can all be powered by solar. We can include EV chargers in the same PPA or as a separate but coordinated installation.
Governance & school type
What about MATs and Multi-Academy Trusts?
MATs benefit enormously from solar PPAs because they can: (a) sign a single master PPA covering multiple schools, simplifying procurement; (b) negotiate better commercial terms based on portfolio scale; (c) standardise sustainability reporting across the trust; (d) demonstrate trust-wide ESG progress to Department for Education and Ofsted. We work with MATs of all sizes, from single academies through to portfolios of 30+ schools.
What about Diocesan and Church schools?
Diocesan schools (Church of England, Catholic) can install solar through PPAs. Some dioceses have central frameworks or recommended providers; we work alongside diocesan estates teams. The PPA structure is the same, funded by the institutional funder, installed by an MCS-certified contractor, and maintained by the funder's O&M partner. Diocesan governance and consent processes are factored into the project timeline.
What if our school is a Free School?
Free Schools can install solar PPAs in the same way as academies, they are charitable trusts with similar governance and VAT treatment. Free Schools that are part of MATs benefit from trust-wide PPA framework arrangements.
Can sixth form colleges and FE colleges install solar?
Yes, sixth form colleges and FE colleges are excellent candidates for solar PPAs. They often have larger roof areas, higher daytime electricity consumption (workshops, IT suites, sports facilities), and active sustainability programmes integrated into curriculum. Many colleges have larger installations (250-500kWp) generating significant proportions of their daytime energy needs.
How do independent schools approach solar PPAs?
Independent schools (fee-paying) typically benefit from the most attractive commercial terms in school solar PPAs because they have stronger covenants, longer planning horizons, and clearer single-decision-maker governance. Solar PPAs often form part of broader estate sustainability strategies and parent-facing ESG positioning.

How does the live data dashboard work?
Every system includes a public-facing display showing real-time generation, daily totals, monthly trends, and lifetime carbon offset. Schools can install a foyer display, integrate the data into the school website, or pull it into a classroom dashboard. The API can also feed into your STEM curriculum, allowing students to analyse real generation data in physics, geography, and design technology lessons.
How can solar support the curriculum?
Solar PV is one of the most teaching-friendly assets a school can have. Primary (KS1-2): renewable energy, weather, electricity basics. Secondary (KS3-4): physics (photovoltaic effect, electrical circuits, energy transfer), geography (climate change, renewable resources, UK energy mix), design technology. Sixth form: A-level physics (semiconductors, energy systems), economics (energy markets), geography (climate policy). We provide free lesson plans aligned to the national curriculum.
What is the carbon impact?
A 100kWp school system displaces approximately 18-22 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year (based on UK grid carbon intensity ~196 gCO2/kWh as of 2024). Over the asset life, that's a substantial volume of avoided CO2, equivalent to taking 100 cars off the road for a year. Verified carbon data feeds directly into your Climate Action Plan reporting and DfE sustainability strategy.
How does this fit with the DfE Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy?
The DfE Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy (April 2022) requires all schools to develop a Climate Action Plan by 2025 covering decarbonisation, adaptation, biodiversity, and climate education. Solar PV addresses multiple strategy objectives in one project: decarbonisation (Scope 2 emissions), climate education (curriculum integration), nature (potential biodiversity-positive ground mount sites), and resilience (energy security). For a detailed proposal: structural drawings or roof condition reports if available, business hours and term-time/holiday consumption patterns, any planned building work, and confirmation of governance and approval process. We can work from minimal info to start, full detail comes during the proposal phase.
Are you regulated and accredited?
Yes. All our installation partners are MCS-certified (Microgeneration Certification Scheme), the UK standard for renewable energy installations. Funders are FCA-regulated where required. We work to industry-standard contracts (REA-aligned), and all installations comply with G99 grid connection standards, BS EN 62446 commissioning, and DNO requirements.
Can we visit existing school solar installations?
Yes, we can arrange site visits to operational schools in our funder network, subject to the host school's permission. This is particularly useful for governing bodies or MAT boards who want to see installations in operation, meet the facilities team at a reference school, and ask questions firsthand.
