Independent and fee-paying schools typically secure the most attractive commercial terms in school solar PPAs. Three factors combine to make this segment particularly favourable to funders:

• Stronger covenant, established schools with diverse income streams (fees, endowments, alumni) present lower commercial risk than maintained schools subject to public funding fluctuations
• Longer planning horizons, many independent schools think in 25-50 year cycles, ideal for solar PPA term lengths and estate strategy
• Clear single-decision-maker governance, Head, Bursar, and Governing Body chain of approval is faster than maintained school equivalents

Independent schools vary enormously in size, from small prep schools with 200 pupils to large senior schools with 2,000+. System sizes are equally variable, but most installations fall in the 200-1,000 kWp range, often spread across multiple buildings.

Many independent schools operate across multiple buildings or even campuses. Senior schools, prep schools, sports complexes, boarding houses, and sometimes farms or stables can all be brought into a single estate-wide solar strategy:

• Senior school main buildings, usually the largest roof areas and highest electricity demand
• Boarding houses, year-round consumption (unlike day schools), excellent solar self-consumption
• Sports complexes, large flat roof areas (sports halls, swimming pool buildings), heavy electrical loads

For fee-paying schools, parent communication and brand positioning matter. Solar PV provides one of the most visible, tangible signals of school values, visible on rooftops, demonstrable in admissions tours, citable in prospectus and newsletter content.

• Open day tours, visible installations referenced as part of estate management story
• Parent newsletters, monthly or termly generation and carbon impact updates
• School annual report, quantified sustainability progress for parents and governors

Heritage and listed building considerations

Many independent schools occupy historic or listed buildings with restrictions on visible roof modifications. Several approaches handle this:

• Modern outbuildings, sports halls, new science blocks, and recent extensions are often the right location for solar
• Hidden roof faces, many listed buildings have unrestricted rear or inner-courtyard roof areas
• Ground mount, school grounds, paddocks, or unused estate areas can house ground-mounted solar invisible from public viewpoints
• Solar carports, staff and visitor car parks offer solar generation potential without affecting main buildings

Endowment and capital strategy fit

Solar PPAs preserve your endowment and capital reserves, zero capital expenditure. The PPA is treated as an operating expense, not a capital asset. This is significantly preferable for schools where capital is earmarked for academic priorities (buildings, scholarships, faculty), and where solar would otherwise compete for limited funds.
