Solar fits primary schools perfectly

Primary schools have specific characteristics that often make solar PV especially well-suited: predictable daytime electricity consumption (mostly classroom lighting, IT, and catering), generally simple single-storey roof structures, and strong appetite for curriculum integration. Even modest installations deliver meaningful cost savings and powerful teaching opportunities.

Typical primary school installation

A typical UK primary school with 200-400 pupils consumes around 50,000-120,000 kWh of electricity per year. A 30-80 kWp solar PV system can offset 40-70% of that consumption, depending on roof orientation and daytime usage patterns.

Curriculum gold for KS1 and KS2

Primary children love the visibility of solar. Watching the sun create electricity in front of them, tracking daily generation, and understanding the link between weather and energy creates genuine engagement with science and sustainability from an early age. What about low-occupancy periods?

Primary schools naturally have low electricity consumption during school holidays, when solar generation is often highest. Modern PPAs account for this through "self-consumption optimisation" and, where appropriate, battery storage to shift solar generation into school days. For most primaries, this does not materially affect the PPA economics, the 30-40 school weeks per year still deliver the bulk of savings.

Funding and governance

Maintained primary schools work through their local authority and governing body. Primary academies use their normal trust governance. The PPA route requires no capital outlay, no CIF bid, no PSL approval. The funder pays for everything; the school just buys the electricity at a fixed rate lower than grid.
